Today, despite 29 states and the District of Columbia having legalized cannabis, its research is still beholden to the same federal restrictions that have existed for half a century. Dr. Jeff Chen MD/MBA, Director of the UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative, will take us on a half-billion-year journey starting with the “cannabis-like” molecules that our bodies make, summarizing our latest understanding of the health impacts of cannabis and examining the future of cannabis research and commercialization. Cannabis is slated to become the most heavily researched botanical product in history. Dr. Chen believes it may shed its “gateway drug” label and become a “gateway herb” to a new paradigm for how we research and utilize naturally occurring compounds in plants and food.
